The four items
Four things the MT4 installer will not create
A setup program copies files onto a disk. It does not open an account, it does not choose a platform, and it does not know whether anything is waiting on the other side. Everything the first login screen wants is produced elsewhere, before the file is fetched.
An account opened on MT4 specifically
Trading accounts at Exness belong to one platform, and that belonging is decided in the Personal Area — the account dashboard on exness.com — at the moment the account is created. Only an MT4 account signs in to the MT4 terminal. An account opened on MT5 will not, however correct its number and password are.
The account number
A number, not an email address. It appears beside the account in the Personal Area and in the message sent when the account was created — the same message that carries the server name. Two minutes with that page open is the difference between a login that takes seconds and a search that starts after the terminal is already installed.
The exact server name
Server names resemble one another closely, and the terminal offers a list rather than a guess. The one that works is the exact name shown next to that account in the Personal Area and repeated in the account-creation email. Reading it once, before the install, removes the most common near-miss at the login window.
The trading password
Set at the moment the trading account is created, and separate from the password used to sign in to the website. It is stored nowhere visible, so it is either known or reset — and the reset happens in the Personal Area, not inside the terminal.
Preparation removes friction from a first setup; it removes nothing from market risk. Trading is risky and will not suit every person or every situation.
When the file comes first
What actually breaks when MT4 is installed before anything else exists
None of these is a fault in the software, and none of them announces itself during the install. Each one surfaces at the same moment — the first login window — and each one sends the setup backwards to a step that was skipped.
The five ways an early install pays for itself later
- The account turns out to be an MT5 account. The terminal refuses it, and the refusal is worded like a credentials problem: wrong number, wrong password. The platform of each account is printed beside it in the Personal Area, which is where this could have been read in one glance beforehand. The repair is not dramatic — a further account, opened on MT4 inside the same Personal Area — but it is a repair, and it happens with a terminal already sitting open and waiting.
- There is no trading account at all yet. Registration creates the Personal Area; it does not create anything the terminal can sign in to. A setup that begins with a download can reach a fully installed MetaTrader 4 while the account it is supposed to open has never been created.
- The account-creation message cannot be reached. The number and the server name arrive by email at the moment the account is made. If that inbox is unavailable, both of the items typed into the login window have to be found again in the Personal Area — which is another sign-in, at exactly the moment nothing is convenient.
- The trading password is being reset from the wrong place. The terminal has no reset. It sends the request nowhere, because the password belongs to the account rather than to the installation. Resetting it means going to the Personal Area, signing in there with the email address, and returning.
- The server is being chosen by resemblance. A list of similar names invites a guess, and a guess is indistinguishable from a wrong password on the screen that follows. The name is written down beside the account; the only reliable move is to read it rather than recognise it.
The running order
The order that reaches a live MT4 terminal in one pass
Five steps, and the download is the fourth of them. Nothing in the list is difficult; the whole value of writing it out is that steps three and four are the ones people habitually swap.

Register on the official website
An email address, a password, and a short questionnaire on exness.com. That produces the Personal Area — the dashboard where everything below happens. The email chosen here is worth choosing carefully: it becomes the sign-in for the dashboard and the destination of every message the setup depends on.

Submit identity verification inside the Personal Area
The identity check requested of brokers runs there as a separate step, with the accepted documents listed on the screen that requests them, and its status shown in the same place. It does not stand between a person and the installer — it earns its position here because it is the step most often postponed and least convenient to remember later.

Open a trading account and choose MT4 for it
This is the step that decides which file is the right file. The platform is picked as the account is created, the trading password is set at the same moment, and the number and server name are issued immediately afterwards. Note the three items down, then fetch the installer
While the Personal Area is still open: the account number, the server name, and a reminder of which password belongs to the terminal. The account-creation email is gone. Where else do the number and server appear?

This is also the reason the registration address is worth keeping reachable: it carries that message and receives the one-time code an unfamiliar device asks for.
Can the trading password be reset from inside the MT4 terminal?
No. The terminal only offers it up for checking; the password is a property of the trading account and is reset in the Personal Area after signing in there with the email address. That is why an email address that cannot be opened blocks both doors rather than one, and why it is the first item to confirm rather than the last.
Does identity verification have to be finished before the MT4 download?
Not for the file itself — verification lives in the Personal Area and has no bearing on which installer is fetched.
